Santorini Tomorrow

June 27th, 2011

My dedication to research knows no bounds. I am giving up my own free time to go to a sun soaked island in the Aegean for a week. I’m taking my laptop and my notebook, IT HAPPENED IN SANTORINI is taking shape nicely.

A very jealous friend pointed out that the volcano on Santorini has erupted many times, with varying degrees of explosivity. And not that I was worried or paranoid or anything, but I checked out the cycles and activity of the volcano over the last 360,000 years (just to put my mind at rest), and was delighted to discover that there have only been about twelve large explosive eruptions. Bloody hell twelve!? Anyway, I don’t care, because obviously I’ll be too busy to be concerning myself with hotter than hell frothing lava and choking sulphur dioxide. Twelve eruptions?  Surely the holiday brochure should have mentioned it?  Still, I can’t wait to go. Santorini is considered to be one of the most stunning and spectacular landscapes in the whole world, with gorgeous red and black beaches, and picturesque white painted villages. What more could you want? Apart from a quiescent volcano.

There’s a little gang of us going. My sister Pauline, my nieces Katie and Lauren and my daughter Elise, so five of us in total, and we get on really well, we hardly ever fall out.  OK, occasionally under certain circumstances we have been known to fall out, over clothes for instance, or shoes, make-up, money, perfume, handbags, giving each other lifts, petrol and hair removal cream.  Actually now that I think of it we fall out quite a lot. Still, I’m sure we’ll get on brilliantly. I mean, obviously we won’t get on brilliantly every minute of every day, who does? After all we’re a normal family.  I’ll keep you posted.
